Time, for Krug has a particular significance. Its passage cannot be hastened, its work must not be hurried. Only now, more than two decades after Clos du Mensil, the single grape variety, single vintage, single vineyard exception to its renowned art of blending, dose Krug proudly present another Rare and Remarkable Champagne.
For years after the release of Krug du Mesil, Henri & Remi Krug sought a second jewel vineyard with the potential, one day to express the quintessence of the Pinot Noir grape. It had to happen…and at length, in the village of Ambonnay, a terroir whose grapes have brought refined, elegant accents to Krug Champagne for generations, they found what they were looking for.
Situated on the edge of the village, on the eastern curve of the Montagne de reims, the Clos d’Ambonnay is a tiny, walled vineyard covering just 0.685 hectare- a mere third the size of the Clos du Mensil. Here, once again Krug would take a risk, bringing to this ultimate garden plot all its uncompromising craftsmanship, and transforming the Clos d’Ambonnay into a treasure whose grapes would yield the most Exceptional Champagne. The first harvest was taken in 1995, when the sunny summer suited the generous nature of the Pinot Noir grape which revealed by Krugs first legendary first fermentation in small oak casks – attains an unprecedented intensity of expression in
Krug Clos d’Ambonnay.
Released from the cellars after a full 12 years, longer than virtually any other Krug champagne, this Rarest of all Krugs enriches its deep, bright gold with the warm gleam of copper.
On the nose, Krug Clos d’Ambonnay allies charm and finesse to substance and character, offering an early hint of the superb structure to come. On the palate, it is exhilaratingly fresh and lively, while at the same time magnificently ample and mature. A resplendent harmony of brioche, grilled almonds, candied spices and lush red berries.
Its finish is elegant, endless – the unmistakable signature of a Great Wine and a Grandiose Champagne.
